A Conversation Between a Husband and a Wife (with pics)

This isn’t a real conversation. It is just how I think the conversation will go. Maybe in real life, Leo would look at me while I was telling him my feelings (all of you men just rolled your eyes, didn’t you?). Maybe in real life, I don’t sound like I am whining or nagging (did you really think I didn’t know how I sounded?). Maybe in real life Leo’s eyes wouldn’t glaze over and he’d decide he was tired and going to sleep because thinking about what to get me for my birthday gives him a headache.

We have celebrated 24 of my birthdays together. That’s a lot of headaches for him trying to figure out what I want. He’s made some mistakes along the way. Some really, really hand-smacking head mistakes. To see click here. I don’t think I am all that hard to buy for. I have simple wants. Click here and read the comments to see what those wants are. A few more hints are here.

See, this is how I imagine he looks when I am talking to him about this stuff:

I might be way off but based on past conversations, this is how I think it would go:

Me: My birthday is in a few days. Do you know what I want?

Leo: Already? Um…Vegas?

Me: While I am really excited we are going, if this was a trip for my birthday, it wouldn’t be to Vegas. It would be to Jamaica. So the trip can be for our anniversary but not my birthday.

Leo: Hmmm…okay.

Me: So do you know what I want?

Leo: I’ll figure it out.

Me: It’s in three days. I really hate that I don’t like my birthday. I know at this age, who cares but it would be nice to feel loved with you know…some grand gesture. Something that says I am the most important person in your life.

This would be Leo’s face as he thinks he is going to make the greatest point ever regarding not doing anything for my birthday:

Leo: Um, I remember my birthday last year and I didn’t get anything or do anything special.

Me: That’s because yours is after mine and I only put as much effort in as you do.

It’s at about this time that his eyes would glaze over, he’d have a headache and need a nap and it would look like this:

The conversation would be over and I would sit in anticipation to see what he has planned for my birthday.

*This post was really just to show off my pictures from the zoo and to give Leo a friendly reminder that my birthday is in three days and while he would like me to not care about celebrating it, I do. I also thought it was fitting that it was of lions because of Leo’s name and that it looked like the lioness was talking and the lion was tuning her out. :)

What about you? What’s the best birthday present you ever got?

  2. This was too funny. I imagine similar convos look very much this way between my husband and I!!! My most recent great b-day present was 2 years ago when hubby and I went away by ourselves for the weekend to Tampa. We did a day-cruise on a World War II merchant marine Victory ship. It was amazing!!!

    • That sounds wonderful! I know I should just be thankful that we are going away but really that is my parents gift to me since they are watching the kids for me. :)

Yeah, that was a fun night! ;) Seriously, though, I adore my birthday, ask for very little and usually receive even less! ;) Can’t wait to wish you a happy day in 3 days! :) Hope Leo read this and took notes!-Ashley

  5. Hahaha! This is such a funny post! I am terrible about birthdays and my hubby is not much better. You would laugh so hard if I told you about his proposal! But we’re still together 21 years later! I guess that is what counts. :)

  7. Okay, too cute with the pictures!! I love loins! I hope you get or get to do something great for your birthday!

My last four birthdays have been weird. When I turned 40, Hubby threw me an elaborate surprise party. That was the year Joey was sick, and I really needed that display of goodness and love. 41, I was 8 months pregnant and depressed and missing Joey, so I asked for nothing. 42 I got another party, this time a small gathering of our closest friends in our backyard. It was fun. This year at 43, I again didn’t really ask for anything, but I bought myself a Clarisonic Pro with some of my writing money and a birthday coupon (I love it!). So, my point is, I have no point, I guess. If we tell our guys what we want, they may do it or they may not. I think it’s really what they want to do. :( Why is that, BTW??

    • I just realized that we are the same age. :) Now that you mention it, I’ve had a bunch of weird birthdays because of life’s circumstances. I’m glad you got something you love this year. I agree that they are going to do what they are going to do and sometimes that works out over here and sometimes it does not.

  8. Oh you are TOOOOOOO FUNNY!!!!!! I love love love this post!!! Such a typical conversation between probably ALL of us with our hubs!!! CLASSIC. Oh how I hope Leo comes through with a BANG for you!!! :) Keep us all posted my friend!!!

    • I will let you know. I hope so, too. I thought of something I wanted but then forgot before I could tell him. I guess I am not making it all that easy for him this year. :)

  9. Ha! Oh you crack me up. Usually my birthday goes something like this: (me pointing to an item on a shelf/website) “I want this. This exact thing. Don’t get it later, put it in the cart now. Here, I’ll go ahead and click purchase for you.” It’s a good arrangement. I get what I want, and he doesn’t have to think about it. :) You’ll have to tell us what he came up with. And happy birthday!

  10. I think that every married woman deserves a grand gesture from her husband on her birthday. BUT I also think men need to be told point blank what that grand gesture should be. They just don’t think like us – which is why we all need plenty of girlfriends :) I hope it’s a great birthday – and I love the zoo pics!

  12. This is hilarious!! And show off those photos away. My husband’s birthday comes first here so I don’t get the luxury of seeing what he’d do for me first! Usually he’s pretty great. Occasionally clueless. It’s always exciting to see which way it will fall! (not)

  13. We have very similar conversations in our house too. ;)

    Great pictures!

  14. I am in the same boat. My husband hates his birthday and getting gifts, so he seems to assume that I feel the same way. I love birthday and gifts, and I assume that he feels the same way. Then we both get upset and it isn’t pretty!! If I used zoo pictueres to illustrate our story, I would pick a honey badger being attacked by bees. Me being the bees and him being the honey badger because “honey badger don’t give…” I won’t finish that, because I’ve just met you and this is a family blog!! Hope you get everything your hert desires for your birthday!!
