Short Post: New York

This is going to be really short because I have to get ready to go to New York tomorrow. It’s the first time Leo and I have left the kids since we have had Gia and I am a little nervous and I want the house to be super-organized so my dad doesn’t have to look for anything and if he does, it will be obvious where it is. Nothing short of  a miracle but I am almost done.

Why is this 100% suburban wanna-be country girl going to New York City, you ask? Two days after Christmas, while driving home from Nico’s basketball game, I got an email from someone from the NFL. She read my posts about our experience with football and invited me to go to a Safety Commission luncheon. I would listen to a few speakers talk about measures taken to make football a safer sport and then give my opinions or thoughts. I’ll discuss the whole story when I get back but long story short, there was no way I was going to be able to go alone to NYC…I get nervous driving in downtown Wheaton or downtown Naperville and have never been to Chicago by myself. Since Leo is a coach, they want to hear his opinions as well so they are paying for both of us to go!

I write a blog about being one carpool away from a padded cell and now I am off to NYC. Who would have thought? As a proud football mom and a fantasy football widow, anything with the NFL is exciting so wish me luck. I’ll report as soon as I get back.

If you could spare a prayer that the chaos stays away so that my dad doesn’t have to deal with it, that would be great.

If you are a blogger, tell me if your blog has ever paid for you to go somewhere exciting.

    • Best comment! Thank you so much, Ashley! You have been a great source of support and such a believer that I appreciate it so much. The nerves are starting to mingle in with the excitement…I mean…it’s the NFL!

  2. Most importantly, I hope you have an incredible trip. Second, The safety and health of young players should always be priority over adults driving ambition to have their children become the next (insert your favorite sports hero name here)

I do not have children of my own, but the one story that I often hear about youth sports from my close friends which concerns me is the overly ambitious schedule that seems to be demanded of young participants. (not going to call them athletes yet)
I understand the extra time and practices required as a multi-sport participant gets to the end of say football season & basketball begins. Overlapping occurs, I’m OK with that.
But I have heard on multiple occasions stories of 3 game basketball tournaments on friday night (during school season) for children as young as 11.
There is little or no way a child that young is getting enough of the one thing he/she really needs at that age – REST! if he/she is participating in 3 games in one night, after a full day of school.
I believe children should be challenged. I believe they should be taught safe ways to push themselves and expand their fitness levels. These are lessons that hopefully last a lifetime. But it has to be done with some common sense, a little regard for the safety of the participant, and quite frankly the sanity of the parents who have to get them there & support them in those sports.

Good Luck A.M.!!! Both you and Leo are the exact type of people who need to be involved with this conference. The NFL chose well.

    • This is some great insight here, my friend. As someone that is on the side of shuffling kids from game to game and watching her kids battle through exhaustion to play several games in a row, I am with you on that one! That last two sentences…I am going to carry those with me when the nerves hit. Thanks, DW!

  3. I hope that you have a wonderful time! :)

  6. This is the coolest! I am so excited for you! We are house of coaches. I coach field hockey and lacrosse and my husband coaches basketball. We love all of the kids on our teams and would do anything to keep our kids safer. This is such an amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to hear about it when you get back.
Hope everything goes well with your dad but I’m sure it will!

    • It went well on both sides, at home and in New York. If we ever get asked again, I’ll give them your name because all sports were represented and you both would have given great insight!

  7. This is an amazing opportunity and I am so glad that you are going! I want to hear all about it when you get back.
